Differentiated Instruction

How to effectively, efficiently, consistently, and affordably differentiate instruction for ALL students (at-risk, traditional, gifted)

How to effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably differentiate instruction

  1. What is differentiated instruction?
  2. What is traditional teaching?
  3. Why is differentiated instruction so important?
  4. What is the traditional approach to differentiated instruction?
  5. Why is the traditional approach not the best approach?
  6. What is the best approach to differentiate instruction?

1.What is differentiated instruction?

Differentiated instruction is the effective, efficient, consistent, affordable, sustained, ability to truly personalize instruction for each student, transferring 21st century skills to each student. Imagine one teacher for each student, effectively, efficiently, consistently, affordably and with scalability, facilitating deep, adaptive learning, that empowers ALL students (at risk, traditional, gifted) with individual student, initial understanding, information fluency, appropriate application, which results in individual student, sustained  performance improvement outcomes.

2. What is traditional teaching?

Traditional, 20th century, factory based teaching, is one size fits all [lecture, power point, video, pdf. file, word document, whiteboard, clickers,  MOOC’s (and all of these one size fits all methodologies, put online)]

Traditional teaching, including traditional one size fits all, online teaching, at best, provides individual student, initial understanding, which is soon forgotten, for 25-30% of the class. For the remaining 70-75% of the class, the teaching is either to slow, or too fast. This is commonly referred to as teaching to the middle.

This approach is not effective, efficient, consistent, nor affordable in empowering ALL students with deep, adaptive skill sets, that result in sustained, individual student performance improvement outcomes.

3. Why is differentiated instruction so important?

Our collective goal is to effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably empower ALL students with 21st century skills, that result in individual student, sustained performance improvement. Traditional teaching has not and will not effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably empower individual students with the skill sets, that result in individual student, sustained performance improvement outcomes. Differentiated instruction, using professionally facilitated, educationally innovative software, in a flipped and blended learning environment, has been proven to effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably advance individual student (at risk, traditional, gifted), deep, adaptive learning outcomes, that result in sustained individual student performance improvement outcomes.

4. What is the traditional approach to differentiated instruction?

Individual teachers implement varied, mixed methodologies within their classrooms (some research based , most NOT based in research). This usually involves some form of one size fits all teaching, teaching to individual learning styles, which has NOT been proven to advance individual learning outcomes and is not a recommended approach and some kind of technology, like tablets, that deliver one size fits all teaching to individual students, faster. They may, or may not, try something educationally innovative, while preserving the traditional one size fits all teaching model.

5. Why is the traditional approach not the best approach?

Quite simply, the traditional and/or the traditional mixed approach, has not and will never, effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably, empower ALL individual students with 21st century, adaptive skill sets, that result in sustained individual performance improvement outcomes (see #2 above).

6. What is the best approach to differentiate instruction?

The research and best practices reflect that a complete and total paradigm change is required, replacing traditional one size fits all teaching with 21st century, differentiated, deep, adaptive learning, using professionally facilitated, effective, efficient, consistent, affordable (scalable), educationally innovative software, that seamlessly integrates relevant, research based, best practices, pedagogy, in a blended and flipped learning environment.

You should find this article explaining what educationally innovative is and other related credible, research based, best practices, third party articles, posted here,  supportive of this approach.

FYI: No current, credible, research supports maintaining traditional, one size fits all methodologies, nor does any current, credible, research support a mixed approach. Please let me know if you find current, research from credible sources supporting traditional paradigms.

IF advancing sustained, student success outcomes, for ALL students, effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably, is our collective objective,  why would we choose to maintain a traditional, 20th century, dis-proven, flawed, one size fits all methodology that is NOT, effective, efficient, consistent, nor affordable, in advancing student success outcomes?

Readily available, educationally innovative, software will effectively, efficiently, consistently and affordably empower teachers with the research driven, best practices, required tools to empower students with advanced student success, that results in advanced, sustained, student, performance improvement outcomes.
