Personal Bias (Opinions) VS. Facts

Personal Bias VS. Facts – When Personal Passion and Aggressive Emotional Promotion does not Connect with the Facts

Personal Bias VS. Facts – By Tom McDonald, 7/12/16

Personal Bias VS. Facts – I. You may have seen this image, with the paragraph below it, multiple times on social media:

You may have shared it, or re-posted it, thinking that it accurately reflected information that you found interesting

What if you found out that the information, from multiple sources, was only partially true, or totally inaccurate?

1. Would you not care and continue to re-post because it’s consistent with your thinking, regardless of the facts?

2. Would you ignore it, thinking it’s not my problem? Or

3. Would you question the post and if you found supporting information that discounts its claims, would you share that information for others to benefit from?

II. What if you accessed a video, from a supposedly credible news organization, that promoted an individuals personal opinion, that was solely supported by their personal passion, with no other supporting, credible information?

1. Would you not care and continue to re-post because it’s consistent with your thinking, regardless of the facts?

2. Would you ignore it, thinking it’s not my problem? Or

3. Would you question the video and if you found supporting information that discounts its claims, would you share that information for others to benefit from?

III.What if you realized that a squeeky wheel, that you’ve been brought up to trust, has been preserving the status-quo to your disadvantage?

1. Would you not care and continue to re-post inaccurate information because it’s consistent with your thinking, regardless of the facts?

2. Would you ignore it, thinking it’s not my problem? Or

3. Would you question the post and if you found supporting information that discounts its claims, would you share that information for others to benefit from?

What if this squeaky wheel was traditional education and traditional educators, aggressively preserving the flawed status-quo by aggressively nay-saying, research validated, best practices that result in positive change?

Well, it is.

There are HUGE success stories, easily accessed, where traditional educators, research what works, choose the right application, appropriately implement it, then measurably and accurately validate its effectiveness, specific to their strategic objective of advancing student success outcomes.

But the traditionalist, nay-sayers, through sheer numbers, argue against research validated, positive change, argue for the preservation of the flawed status-quo.  BUT they don’t validate their incumbent positions with relevant, credible supporting information. Even so, regardless of the facts, we take what they say as credible.

I see us, as a society, becoming more absorbed with our personal agendas, than we are with the facts. And with the barrage of information/misinformation out there, for us to easily access, we seem to blindly take as fact, whatever aligns to our thinking and/or whatever is promoted the loudest and the most often.

Individuals, that collectively have self-serving agendas, due to our chosen indifference, can manipulate outcomes to their advantage, directly to our dis-advantage. We are passively allowing this to happen.

IF you are personally invested in a strategic process, that is embroiled in controversy, you MUST access and understand the proven RESEARCH, so you can take an educated position, that will support your strategic investment. You deserve a positive strategic outcome.
