Tutor Training: New Online Tutor Training Course Breaks Down Barriers

(Los Angeles, CA – March 12, 2007)   Crossroads of Learning, a division of Media InfoSystems, Inc., has just announced the launch of “Tutoring Foundations,” the first tutor training program to address the unique needs of today’s adult learners featuring “anytime” availability, quality supervision, and research-based curriculum.

The course was developed over eighteen months of intensive collaboration with the National Tutoring Association (NTA) and Fielding Graduate University. “Tutoring Foundations” is approved by the NTA and is designed to be convenient and practical for tutors nationwide who are seeking training and certification. The course reinforces the NTA’s mission and goals for raising professional standards and accountability through best practices, methods, and protocols. A complete syllabus is available at https://www.facebook.com/crossroadsoflearning

“Tutoring Foundations” is a self-paced, research-based, online course, estimated to require forty hours of study including a final telephone interview and consultation. Students will be supervised by an NTA certified advanced or master tutor, who will review course work with them and be available for advice during the course. The format of the course was designed to meet the unique needs of professional tutors who need flexibility of hours in order to pursue continuing education and professional credentials. There is no need to conform to a calendar or schedule of classes. Upon enrollment, a master tutor is assigned to the student and the course begins immediately. The student can do their reading, assignments and quizzes all online at their own pace.

The nine-module course was developed under the supervision of Bob Lasiewicz, managing director of Crossroads of Learning. The content team included six contributing educators, all respected practitioners in tutoring and tutor training.  The School of Educational Leadership and Change at Fielding Graduate University, who approved the course content and offers continuing education credit (CEU) to graduates.  “By gathering top experts and innovators in education, we are delivering the highest quality course on one-to-one education techniques, ethics and legal issues,” says Lasiewicz. “The online platform we use, called BrainX, is also groundbreaking, applying advanced brain and learning research within our curriculum.  Individualized instruction is a real key to addressing student needs across the country and we are very proud to offer this resource to help meet the ongoing professional needs of tutors, trainers, coaches and teachers.”

Reviews are coming in from the first students of “Tutoring Foundations.”  Mackenzie Cloutier, owner of Academic Upgrades in Attleboro, MA says the course was “extremely helpful. I feel rejuvenated. This course gave me a chance to look at my tutoring business and clients with new eyes and I am already incorporating renewed methodologies.”  Sylvie Bordzuk from Oceanside, NY has been both a teacher and a tutor for three decades. She recently took the “Tutoring Foundations” course and said, “The course content is excellent and covers all aspects of tutoring. Even classroom teachers who wish to tutor will benefit from the course, as one-on-one instruction requires some skills which are distinct from those called for in a group setting.”

As communities across America grapple with a shortage of qualified tutors and how to best apply the No Child Left Behind mandates, this new course offers one key to the puzzle, by helping to develop qualified one-to-one educators in a unique, time and cost effective manner.
